What Gauge Sheet Metal For Body Repair
- #1
Hello,
I'thousand a scrap of a newbie to car body repair and I was wondering what thickness steel I demand to buy?
The vehicle'southward a Nissan Serena, I don't actually know what the original thickness of steel would have been but I'm guessing at 0.8-one.0mm? I'll exist repairing the floorpan and $.25 of the arches.
I've been offered some i.6mm sail cheap but I guess that's a bit likewise thick...?
Help! I don't know where to commencement
Been out and bought some 0.6 wire today and only need some metal now.

Hello C West,
your kickoff estimate is more like it, 1.six could be used for structural sections of the torso, e.g. chassis runway.

16g will practise nicely for the floors and chassis simply information technology will take some beating into identify, it'due south squeamish and thick for welding. 18g (one.2mm) is a good compromise.

Think I'll go for 18g then, merely thing I'm worried about is that if the patch is 1.2mm and the existing cloth is thinner than that and then won't I take problems with blow-through when welding to information technology?
Would 20g be a better idea or is that probable to exist thinner than the original bodywork?

With a Japanese machine, I dubiety any of the sections on the motorcar are 1.2mm. That is classic car thickness, not modern car metal.
one.0mm sheet will be plenty! ;-)

ane.2mm is easier to weld with 0.6mm wire if y'all weld to the border of the thicker textile and let it run onto the thinner. I used it on my Vanette and had no problems and information technology was merely a Serena with less seats.

I use 0.9mm, master reason we take lots of it.

Measure what your repairing and apply the same size.

Some other giddy question I'm afraid.
Because some of what I'm patching is quite a complicated shape (some weird curves etc), is it OK to join multiple patches together to make your repair department?
I've attached a crappy paint diagram - where the flooring joins to the border of the step, there is an extra bit of metal in a gentle bend at the top (one assumes that it is there to provide extra bracing for the step?)
Then is it OK to course the patch for the floor in a seperate section to the side of the step, and weld them together?

Hello c. Due west.,
yes that's fine. That's how panel beaters make coach congenital machine bodies, they shape sections and weld the lot together.

I'1000 a newbie besides. But I can do some small jobs. Just I'm going to exist welding the inside of the arches of my 2003 Transit Van. I tin run into the encarmine engine. Lol. What thickness would I need? Or any other advice is much appreciated. And besides. Is information technology true that I have to disconnect the battery earlier I do any welding? As I don't have the code for the radio. Thanks.

I like 1.2, its thick plenty to be stretched to shape

Aforementioned as you're replacing - dissimilar cars utilize different thickness in unlike places. i.ii is generally the max though so information technology's not a bad go-to if you don't take an verbal match.
